The Horcrux project was started by Matt Lorentz in 2025, supported by a small group of friends and a grant from OpenSats.org. The original inspiration goes back to 2018 and the Dark Crystal project that built a very similar tool on the Secure Scuttlebutt protocol. For years Matt and friends talked about a way to mutually share server passwords in order to wind servers down gracefully if the worst should happen.

Horcrux is part of a growing commons of convivial tools: free to use, open source, protocol-based, made to outlast the makers. If you would like to contribute with constructive feedback, encouragement, code, money, governance, or other skills, please get in touch below.
