Terms of Service

Welcome to Horcrux. By creating a Horcrux account or using the Horcrux app (the "Service"), you agree to these Terms of Service and the accompanying Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

You accept these Terms by checking "I agree to the Terms & Privacy Policy" during onboarding and completing account creation. A record of your acceptance (version and timestamp) is stored with your account. If we publish updated Terms, the Service will ask you to accept the new version before you can continue using it.

1. The Service

Horcrux is a mobile app that backs up your most sensitive credentials in vaults with encrypted keys that are distributed to people you choose ("stewards"). When you or a steward needs to recover your data, a threshold of stewards approve the recovery and your data is decrypted.

Horcrux also operates a relay and supporting services (push notifications, account and consent management) to make the Service usable.

2. Your account and keys

When you create a Horcrux account, a Nostr key pair is generated on your device and stored in your device's secure storage. Your private key never leaves your device.

  • You are solely responsible for keeping your device and private key secure. We cannot recover your private key if it is lost.
  • Your Nostr public key (npub) is your identity on the Service and is published on Nostr.

3. Your responsibilities

You agree to:

  • Use the Service lawfully and only for data you have the right to store and share.
  • Not attempt to disrupt, reverse-engineer the operator-run relay's infrastructure, or abuse the Service.

4. No warranty

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE, ERROR-FREE, OR THAT YOUR DATA WILL BE RECOVERABLE. YOU BEAR ALL RISK OF LOSS.

5. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, SINGLE ORIGIN SOFTWARE LLC SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

6. Account suspension and termination

You may delete your Horcrux account at any time from Settings → Account. Deleting your account publishes a Nostr "Request to Vanish" (NIP-62) event instructing relays to remove your public events, and clears your account record on the operator-run services. Deletion does not affect keys you hold for other users, which remain until the relevant vault is recovered or deleted by its owner.

We may suspend, restrict, or terminate your access to the operator-run relay or supporting services at our discretion, for any reason or no reason, to the extent permitted by applicable law. We may also restrict access for accounts that violate these Terms, that abuse the Service, or that we are required to restrict under applicable law. Where feasible, we will attempt to notify you before or promptly after suspending access.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to use the Service to store, share, or distribute content that is illegal, infringing, or harmful, or to disrupt the operator-run relay or other users' use of the Service. We may restrict access to the operator-run relay for accounts that violate these Terms.

8. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, the version number increases and we will publish the updated Terms on our website at horcruxbackup.com. The updated Terms take effect 30 days after they are published. If you continue to use the Service after that 30-day period, you are deemed to have accepted the updated Terms. If you do not agree, you may stop using the Service and delete your account as described in Section 6.

The in-app version of the Terms reflects the current version at the time you open the app. You can always review the latest version on our website.

9. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Indiana, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
